# Cocaine detox: timeline, symptoms and what actually helps

Cocaine withdrawal is rarely medically dangerous, which means most people do not need a hospital detox for cocaine alone. It is also considerably harder than that makes it sound, and the part nobody warns you about starts in week two.

This page tells you when you do not need us. The assessment is free and it is not a sales call.

Cocaine detox usually takes three to five days for the acute symptoms, and most people do not need a medically supervised detox for cocaine on its own, because cocaine withdrawal is not normally life threatening. The crash starts within hours, symptoms peak around day two to four, and sleep and appetite settle over the following week. What lasts far longer is the flat, joyless period afterwards, which can run for several weeks and is when most people go back. Detox kits and cleansing drinks do not work: nothing speeds up how fast your body clears cocaine. The one real danger is if you also drink heavily or use benzodiazepines, because withdrawal from those can cause seizures and can be fatal.

## What cocaine detox actually means

Detox is the period during which the drug leaves your body and the nervous system readjusts to working without it. With alcohol or benzodiazepines that process can be medically dangerous, which is why those detoxes are supervised. Cocaine is different. Stopping cocaine is not usually life threatening, and most people do not need a medical detox for cocaine alone.

That is the single most useful thing on this page, and it is worth being precise about, because it cuts both ways. It means you are unlikely to need a hospital bed. It does not mean stopping is easy, and it does not mean you should do it with no support at all, because the difficulty with cocaine is psychological and it is severe.

There is one important exception. Cocaine is very often used alongside alcohol, and heavy drinkers who stop everything at once are at risk from the alcohol withdrawal, not the cocaine. If you drink daily as well, read the safety box below before you do anything.

If you drink heavily as well, do not stop both at onceAlcohol withdrawal can cause seizures and, at its most severe, delirium, and it can be fatal. The same is true of benzodiazepines. If cocaine is not the only thing you use, speak to your GP before stopping, because the risk comes from the other substance rather than the cocaine. In an emergency call 999 in the UK or 112 anywhere in Europe, or NHS 111 for urgent advice that is not an emergency.

## The cocaine detox timeline

Cocaine clears the body quickly, so the acute phase starts within hours. What follows it lasts considerably longer, and it is the part almost nobody is warned about.

When

What tends to happen

First 24 hours

The crash. Exhaustion, heavy sleep or an inability to sleep at all, a large appetite returning, low mood and irritability. Cravings can be intense from the first evening.

Days 2 to 4

The hardest stretch for most people. Agitation, disturbed sleep, vivid dreams, difficulty concentrating, and a flat, joyless feeling. Cravings usually peak here and are strongly triggered by places, people and times of day.

Days 5 to 10

Sleep and appetite begin to settle. Mood is still low and motivation is poor. This is where many people conclude they feel worse sober than they did using, and go back.

Weeks 2 to 10

The long tail. Anhedonia, the inability to take pleasure in ordinary things, plus waves of craving that arrive without warning. It lifts, but gradually, and this window is where most relapses happen.

Timings vary with how much you used, for how long, whether it was powder or crack, and what else is involved. This is a general picture rather than a prediction about you.

## Cocaine detox symptoms

Cocaine withdrawal is mostly psychological, which is precisely why it is underestimated. There is no dramatic physical illness to point at, so people assume it should be manageable by willpower.

Type

What you are likely to feel

Mood

Low mood, irritability, anxiety, and in some people significant depression. Suicidal thinking is a recognised feature of stimulant withdrawal and is a reason to tell someone rather than to sit with it alone.

Energy and sleep

Exhaustion, then disrupted sleep and vivid or unpleasant dreams. Sleep is usually the slowest thing to return to normal.

Pleasure

Anhedonia. Food, company, sex and music all feel muted. This is the symptom that most often ends an attempt to stop, and knowing it is temporary changes how people handle it.

Cravings

Strong, sudden, and tied to cues rather than to time. A place, a payday, a particular person or a drink can set one off weeks in.

Physical

Aches, tremor, slowed movement, increased appetite. Real but rarely dangerous.

Thinking

Poor concentration and short-term memory. It recovers, but not in the first fortnight.

## Do cocaine detox kits and detox drinks work?

No, and this is worth saying plainly because a great many people search for exactly this.

Nothing speeds up how fast your body clears cocaine. Your liver metabolises it at its own rate. Detox kits, cleansing drinks, herbal supplements, cranberry juice, vinegar and vitamin regimes do not change that rate, and the products sold on this promise are not regulated as medicines and do not have to prove anything.

Two honest caveats, because the picture is not quite that simple. Drinking a very large volume of water dilutes urine, which is why some products are really sold for defeating a drug test rather than for health; testing laboratories check for dilution and it is a poor strategy. And staying hydrated, eating properly and sleeping do genuinely help you feel better while withdrawal runs its course, which is not the same claim as clearing the drug faster.

If what you actually want is to stop using rather than to pass a test, no product will do it. The things that do work are unglamorous: distance from your supply, structure, sleep, other people, and treating whatever the cocaine was doing for you.

## Can you detox from cocaine at home?

For cocaine alone, usually yes, and for many people that is a perfectly reasonable plan. It is safer than alcohol or opioid detox and does not require medical supervision on its own. What determines whether it works is rarely the withdrawal itself. It is the environment.

Home detox has a fair chance when

Get support, or consider a residential stay, when

You can be away from your supply and the people you use with

Your dealer, your usual company or your usual places are unavoidable

Someone knows what you are doing and is around

You would be doing it entirely alone

You can take a few days with no obligations

You have to keep functioning at full speed throughout

You drink little or not at all

You also drink daily, or use benzodiazepines. That changes the medical picture

This is a first serious attempt

You have stopped several times and gone back at the same point each time

Your mood is broadly stable

You have depression, or thoughts of harming yourself

If most of your answers are in the right-hand column, that is not a verdict on you. It is information about the odds, and it is the reason residential treatment exists.

## Crack cocaine detox

The withdrawal from crack is the same process pharmacologically, because crack is cocaine in a smokable form. What differs is the pattern around it. Crack reaches the brain faster and fades faster, so use tends to come in tighter, longer binges, and the crash at the end of one is correspondingly heavier.

In practice that means the first days are often harder, cravings are more intensely tied to the ritual of using, and the gap between deciding to stop and being confronted with an opportunity is shorter. It also means the lungs may need attention, and that dental and general health problems are more common. None of that changes the core advice, but it does raise the value of not attempting it in the same room where it happened.

### Not sure whether you need a detox at all?

The assessment is free and it is not a sales call. For cocaine on its own the answer is usually no, and we will tell you that rather than sell you a place you do not need.

## What happens after the detox, and why it matters more

Detox is the easy half. Getting cocaine out of your system takes days; not going back takes considerably longer, and the evidence on this is not ambiguous. Detox on its own, with nothing following it, has a poor record across every substance, and with cocaine the long flat window afterwards is exactly when people conclude that sobriety is not worth it.

What changes the odds is what fills that window: structure, other people, treatment for whatever the cocaine was regulating, and a plan for the cravings that arrive in week six. That is what a treatment programme is for, and it is why we treat detox as a prerequisite rather than as the product. Our [cocaine addiction treatment page](/cocaine-addiction-treatment/) sets out what that involves.

## Where Sierra Recovery fits, and where it does not

We are going to be blunt, because this page attracts people searching for a detox and it would be easy to sell one. Sierra Recovery is not a detox unit. We are entered in the Registro Andaluz de Centros, Servicios y Establecimientos Sanitarios (the Andalusian register of health centres, services and establishments) under N.I.C.A. 67331, authorised by the Junta de Andalucía as a registered health centre with a supervised treatment residence. That is not a hospital.

For cocaine on its own, most people do not need a medical detox, and we will say so at assessment. Where one is needed, usually because of alcohol or benzodiazepines used alongside, it is arranged in an appropriate medical setting and completed before admission, billed separately from the programme fee. What we provide is the part that comes after: a 28-day residential programme, published in full at £9,900, three group sessions a day, individual therapy three times a week and a seventeen-module curriculum. You can [check our registration yourself](/regulation-and-licensing/) on the Junta's public register.

## Questions people actually ask

How long does cocaine detox take?

The acute phase is short. The crash begins within hours, symptoms usually peak between day two and day four, and sleep and appetite start to settle over the following week. What lasts much longer is the flat, joyless period afterwards, which can run for several weeks and sometimes a couple of months. That later window is when most relapses happen, which is why what follows the detox matters more than the detox itself.

Is cocaine withdrawal dangerous?

Cocaine withdrawal on its own is not usually life threatening, unlike alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal, which can cause seizures. The risks with cocaine are psychological: severe low mood, and in some people suicidal thinking, which is a recognised feature of stimulant withdrawal. The danger rises sharply if you also drink heavily or use benzodiazepines, because stopping those abruptly can be fatal. Speak to your GP first if that applies to you.

Do cocaine detox kits or detox drinks work?

No. Nothing speeds up the rate at which your body clears cocaine; that is set by your liver. Detox kits, cleansing drinks and herbal supplements are not regulated as medicines and do not have to prove any of their claims. Drinking large volumes of water only dilutes urine, which testing laboratories check for. Hydration, food and sleep genuinely help you feel better while withdrawal runs its course, which is a different claim from clearing the drug faster.

Can I detox from cocaine at home?

For cocaine alone, often yes, and it does not usually require medical supervision. Whether it works depends far more on your environment than on the withdrawal: being away from your supply and the people you use with, having someone around, and being able to take a few days with fewer obligations. If you also drink daily or use benzodiazepines, or if you have depression or thoughts of self-harm, get medical advice before stopping.

Is crack cocaine detox different?

Pharmacologically it is the same process, because crack is cocaine in a smokable form. The pattern around it differs: crack reaches the brain faster and fades faster, so binges tend to be tighter and longer and the crash heavier. The first days are often harder and cravings are more strongly tied to the ritual of using. The core advice is unchanged.

Does Sierra Recovery arranges cocaine detox before admission?

No. Sierra is a registered health centre with an authorised addiction healthcare unit, not a hospital or a detox unit. For cocaine on its own most people do not need a medical detox, and we will tell you that at assessment rather than sell you one. Where a detox is needed, usually because of alcohol or benzodiazepines used alongside, it is arranged in an appropriate medical setting and completed before admission, billed separately. What we provide is the 28-day residential programme that follows.
