NHS treatment through your local Alcohol and Drug Partnership is free, and several national charity and helpline services are free too. If you choose private rehab, the average cost of a 28-day residential stay in the UK commonly falls somewhere between roughly £8,000 and £40,000, and more at the luxury end. Rehab cost in the UK does not usually vary much by city, so this range applies whether you are looking near Edinburgh, Glasgow or anywhere else in Scotland; treatment abroad can cost less than a private UK stay. For a great many people these free addiction treatment services are enough, and none of them costs anything, so if you are asking whether you have to pay for rehab in Scotland, the answer for NHS care is no. NHS treatment in Scotland is delivered locally through Alcohol and Drug Partnerships, and several national charities and helplines sit alongside it, together with peer support groups you can join at any stage of your recovery journey. ### Do you have to pay for rehab in Scotland? No, not for NHS treatment. Every part of the table below, your local Alcohol and Drug Partnership, the national helplines and the mutual-aid meetings, is free at the point of use. What you pay for is choice: quicker access to a bed, a private room, or a particular setting, which is what private rehab and residential treatment abroad offer instead. NHS drug and alcohol treatment in Scotland is arranged through local Alcohol and Drug Partnerships; helpline hours and local service availability can change, so confirm directly. ### Who each free service is for Your local NHS Alcohol and Drug Partnership is the main route to assessment, a keyworker, community detox where it is clinically suitable, groups and recovery support, and onward referral to residential detox or rehab where that is the right step, all at no cost. A keyworker can also help you build a treatment plan around your own goals, including how to manage withdrawal symptoms safely and what ongoing support you may need for long-term recovery. We Are With You offers free, confidential drug, alcohol and mental-health support in many parts of Scotland, in person and online. Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol & Drugs supports anyone worried about someone else’s use. Know the Score gives free, confidential information over the phone. AA and NA run free meetings across the country and work alongside any treatment, and some areas also have SMART Recovery or Al-Anon groups for people affected by someone else’s drinking or drug use. Your GP or NHS 24 can start the process and advise on urgent situations. ## Private residential rehab in Scotland Scotland does have established private rehab centres and other residential rehabilitation facilities, including in the Scottish Borders and near the central belt, so unlike some parts of the UK a residential stay does not always mean travelling far. You can reach residential care two ways: through the NHS, by referral from your Alcohol and Drug Partnership where a residential placement is clinically indicated, which is free but subject to assessment and waiting times, or privately, which you fund yourself or through private health insurance and which usually gives quicker access to a bed. Some centres also offer outpatient rehab or a structured treatment plan alongside inpatient rehab, for people whose circumstances suit a less intensive setting, and an alcohol detox can typically be arranged as part of either route where it is clinically needed. As a guide to private rehab cost, published UK directories list residential rehab from roughly £1,000 to £1,500 a week at the lower end, rising to £10,000 a week or more at the luxury end. If your local Alcohol and Drug Partnership can see you quickly and community treatment suits your circumstances, there may be little reason to pay. Private rehab, or residential treatment abroad, tends to be worth considering when you need a bed sooner than the NHS route can provide, want a private room, or your job or family situation makes a fixed, short residential stay more practical than an open-ended community programme. Always confirm directly with the service or centre, and, for any private centre, check its current registration with [the Care Inspectorate](https://www.careinspectorate.com/) in Scotland. ## What drives the cost Whichever route you look at, a handful of things move the price: - Whether you need a medical detox. A supervised alcohol detox from alcohol, benzodiazepines or opioids adds medical and nursing cost, and for higher-risk cases a hospital setting, particularly where withdrawal symptoms are likely to be severe. - Length of stay. A 14-day stay costs less than 28 days, but many people need the longer rehab programme to make it stick and to support long-term recovery. - Room and setting. A private room and a smaller, higher-amenity centre cost more than a shared room in a larger unit. - Aftercare. Good continuing care after you leave, including relapse-prevention planning and access to peer support such as AA, NA or SMART Recovery, is part of the value, and worth asking about before you compare headline prices. Funding routes are, in short: the NHS (free, via your Alcohol and Drug Partnership), self-funding, private health insurance where your policy covers addiction treatment, and payment options, including payment plans, offered by some private centres. Not every private health insurance policy will cover the cost of rehab, and cover can also depend on whether a mental-health condition is involved alongside the addiction, so it is worth checking your policy wording directly with your insurer before you rely on it.
