In Sweden, you may not have to pay for rehab at all. Addiction treatment is largely public: regional dependency services (beroendevård) and municipal social services (socialtjänsten) assess, treat and, where needed, fund residential rehab, and national helplines and mutual-aid groups are free. Outpatient support, medically supervised detox and, where needed, inpatient or residential treatment can all be reached through the public system before you consider paying privately. Private residential treatment does exist and is faster to access, but published directory prices for private rehab run into the thousands of pounds a week. Treatment abroad can cost less than a private Swedish stay. The real options for alcohol and drug rehab are set out below, side by side. It covers addiction treatment in Sweden and alcohol rehab in Sweden, from free to private, plus one honest option abroad.

If you may be physically dependent, do not stop suddenlyStopping alcohol or benzodiazepines abruptly can be dangerous if you are physically dependent, and severe withdrawal can cause seizures. Get medical advice before you make any change. In a life-threatening emergency in Sweden call 112. For round-the-clock health advice call 1177 (or +46 771 1177 00 from a non-Swedish mobile).

Who publishes this, and why it matters. This guide is published by Sierra Recovery. We are not based in Sweden. We are a licensed residential centre in Málaga, Spain, and we appear once below, clearly marked, as one option among the Swedish ones, for people who would consider treatment away from home. Unlike a paid directory, nothing here is influenced by anyone paying for placement, and where a Swedish option is better for you than we are, we say so plainly.

## The picture in Sweden

Sweden treats alcohol addiction and drug addiction mainly through its public system rather than a private market. Two parts of that system share the work in addiction treatment. The regions (regioner) run the medical side through dependency care, known as beroendevård, including assessment and medically supervised detox. The municipalities (kommuner) run the social side through social services, socialtjänsten, which can arrange and fund longer support, including a placement at a residential treatment home (behandlingshem) where that is the right step. Alcohol rehabilitation and drug rehabilitation are treated as parts of the same public system in Sweden, covering most levels of addiction care, so you do not need a different route depending on whether it is a drug or alcohol addiction. For most people, the public route is the sensible first move, and for many it is enough.

Because so much care is publicly funded, the private rehab market in Sweden is smaller than in countries like the UK. It exists, but a good deal of residential care is reached through, and paid for by, the municipality rather than out of pocket. That matters when you weigh up the overall cost of treatment.

### Who each free service is for

1177 is the front door: free health advice by phone, day or night, and the way most people are pointed towards regional dependency care. Beroendevård is the medical service that carries out assessment, runs outpatient programmes and, where you are physically dependent, a supervised detox. Socialtjänsten at your municipality handles the longer social support and can decide to fund a residential placement. Alkoholhjälpen (which now includes the former Alkohollinjen) gives free, anonymous telephone support to anyone thinking about their drinking, and to people worried about someone else. Anonyma Alkoholister and Anonyma Narkomaner run free meetings you can attend without a referral, alongside whatever treatment plan you follow, offering ongoing aftercare and support for relapse prevention on the wider recovery journey.

## Private residential rehab in Sweden

Private residential treatment, sometimes described as private drug rehab, private alcohol rehab or treatment at private rehab clinics, does exist in Sweden, but it is a smaller market than the public system. Some private clinics offer assessment and outpatient care in the larger cities, and residential rehab facilities (behandlingshem), which provide inpatient care, take longer stays, often arranged and funded through the municipality rather than paid privately. Where people do go private and pay themselves, the overall rehab cost, whether for residential care or an outpatient rehab cost for day treatment, is set by each rehab centre and is not published in a single national tariff.

As an indication only, public treatment-directory listings put the cost of alcohol rehab and other private rehab treatment in Sweden across a wide band, commonly the equivalent of several thousand pounds a week and well into five figures for a month-long stay in rehab at the higher end. These are indicative ranges compiled from published directories, not quotations, and every centre sets its own fees.

Indicative alcohol rehab costs and other private ranges compiled from published directory listings, checked 25 July 2026. Not quotations. Local fees are set in Swedish kronor (SEK); sterling figures are approximate.

Please verify before you decide. Services, waiting times and prices change, and every centre and municipality sets its own terms. The figures here are drawn from public services’ own information and published directory listings, dated above. Always confirm directly with the service, clinic or your local kommun.

Considering residential treatment abroad?

## Sierra Recovery, Málaga, Spain

We are a registered health centre in Humilladero, Málaga, in southern Spain, licensed by the Junta de Andalucía. We provide residential addiction treatment in English, and our clinical model is adapted from the model run by PROMIS in the UK since 1986. Our residential programme is £9,900 for 28 days, published and private-room included, with hospital detox billed separately. We charge no referral fees.

We are a rehabilitation centre, not a hospital or a detox unit. Where a medically supervised detox is needed, it is completed elsewhere, in an appropriate medical setting, before admission; qualified nurses are part of the team during your stay. Our methodology is the Regulation Model.

## Which option is right for you

What counts as effective addiction treatment differs from person to person, which is part of why Sweden offers several different routes. Sweden’s addiction treatment system is built around different levels of care, from free outpatient rehab and community support through to medically supervised detox, therapy sessions and, where needed, inpatient rehab or a residential placement, matching the type of rehab to the type of addiction and its severity, whether that is alcohol dependence or a wider substance use disorder. Start with 1177 and your regional beroendevård if you are unsure where to begin, if a supervised detox may be needed, or if cost is the barrier. Contact socialtjänsten at your municipality if you may need longer residential support and want it funded publicly. Use Alkoholhjälpen, AA or NA alongside whatever else you do, from today, at no cost, whatever your treatment programme or treatment plan looks like. Consider private treatment in Sweden if you want faster or more discreet access and can meet the fees. Consider treatment abroad only if the public route does not fit, distance from your usual environment would genuinely help, you can travel, and you do not need an immediate hospital detox. Going to rehab, in Sweden or abroad, is a serious step whatever the forms of addiction involved, and a free public option is often the honest first answer, so we would rather you used it than travelled when you did not need to, whatever form of drug and alcohol rehab suits you best.

If, having read all of that, treatment abroad still feels like the right fit, the clearest next step is a confidential conversation through [admissions](/admissions/), where we will tell you plainly if a Swedish rehab programme would serve your alcohol or drug addiction better than ours, wherever your addiction recovery journey begins.

## Questions people ask

How much does rehab cost in Sweden?

For most people it can cost nothing out of pocket. Sweden treats addiction mainly through its public system: regional dependency care (beroendevård) and municipal social services (socialtjänsten) provide assessment, detox and, where needed, funded residential placements, and national helplines and mutual-aid groups are free. Private residential treatment exists and is faster to access, with published directory prices commonly running to several thousand pounds a week, and well into five figures for a month-long stay at the higher end. Those private figures are indicative ranges, not quotations.

Is addiction treatment free in Sweden?

Largely, yes. Regional dependency care is free or low cost at the point of use, and municipal social services can fund longer support, including a place at a residential treatment home, sometimes with a means-tested contribution. National helplines such as Alkoholhjälpen, and mutual-aid groups Anonyma Alkoholister and Anonyma Narkomaner, are completely free. Call 1177 for health advice on where to start.

How do I get into rehab in Sweden?

The usual front door is 1177, the national health-advice service, which points you towards your regional beroendevård for assessment and, if you are physically dependent, a supervised detox. For longer residential support, contact socialtjänsten at your local municipality (kommun), which can arrange and fund a placement. You can also use Alkoholhjälpen (020-84 44 48) or AA and NA meetings straight away, at no cost.

Is it safe to stop drinking or taking benzodiazepines on my own?

Not if you may be physically dependent. Stopping alcohol or benzodiazepines abruptly can cause severe withdrawal, including seizures, so get medical advice before you change anything. In a life-threatening emergency in Sweden call 112, and for round-the-clock health advice call 1177, or +46 771 1177 00 from a non-Swedish mobile.

Why would someone from Sweden consider rehab abroad?

Usually for faster or more discreet access, or because distance from the environment tied to their use would help. It only makes sense once the free public route has been considered and does not fit, you can travel, and you do not need an immediate hospital detox. Sierra Recovery in Málaga, Spain, is a licensed residential centre (N.I.C.A. 67331) treating in English at £9,900 for 28 days, with hospital detox billed separately and no referral fees. We would rather you used a Swedish service than travelled when you did not need to.
