That means real choice, but also that quality and price vary enormously from one centre to the next. The most important thing to know at the start is that cost is not a wall: free federal help exists in every state, and under the Affordable Care Act substance use disorder treatment is an essential health benefit, so most insurance plans must cover it to some degree. Addiction takes many forms, and drug addiction, alcohol abuse and other drug or alcohol addiction each call for slightly different treatment options. Effective addiction treatment usually addresses the type of addiction alongside any co-occurring mental health need, since the levels of addiction and forms of addiction people experience vary enormously from one person to the next, which is exactly why no single type of rehab or rehab programme suits everyone. ## Free and public options in the United States Start here. Medicaid eligibility and state-funded services vary by state. ### Who each free service is for The SAMHSA helpline and FindTreatment.gov are the fastest way to find licensed care near you and to understand what your insurance or Medicaid will cover. Medicaid and state-funded programmes provide free or low-cost treatment for people who are eligible, including detox, outpatient and, in many states, residential care. AA, NA and SMART Recovery run free meetings almost everywhere and work alongside any treatment you choose. 988 is the line for a mental health or suicidal crisis, not only for people already in treatment. These free treatment options support people regardless of whether the issue is drug and alcohol addiction, alcohol and drug rehab needs, or alcohol addiction alone. ## Private and residential rehab in the United States Unlike some countries, the United States has thousands of licensed private residential centres, in every state, from modest programmes to high-end coastal facilities. That breadth is a genuine advantage, but it also means marketing can be aggressive and standards differ widely. We will not single out or recommend any one centre here. Instead, verify any centre you are considering on [FindTreatment.gov](https://findtreatment.gov/) and with your state licensing board, and ask directly whether they are in-network with your insurance before you commit to anything. Names vary widely: some call themselves a rehab centre, others a drug and alcohol rehab, an alcohol rehab, or simply a private rehab. The rehab facilities and rehab services on offer differ just as much as the name, and some private clinics operate as private rehab clinics treating only drug rehab or only private alcohol rehab, so always check exactly what is included and confirm current licensing before you commit. Whatever it is called, a private rehab facility usually falls into one of two categories: inpatient treatment, where you stay in a rehab facility full-time, or a day programme you attend while living at home. Drug treatment and drug addiction treatment for opioids or stimulants often differ from an alcohol or drug detox pathway, and drug and alcohol abuse rarely responds to a one-size-fits-all approach, which is why treatment facilities usually build an individual assessment into the first week. Whether inpatient rehab, outpatient rehab or a mix of the two, most providers structure a treatment programme, sometimes called a rehab programme, around a personalised treatment plan, moving from medical detox through inpatient care into an outpatient programme and aftercare as recovery progresses. Alcohol rehabilitation and rehab treatment for other substances typically follow the same staged approach, though the intensity and length of each level of care depends on individual need. Several factors affect the cost of rehab, and it helps to know what typically drives the price up or down. Length of stay is one of the biggest: a longer residential stay naturally costs more than a short outpatient programme, and the location of the rehab, the level of medical care on site, and whether medical detox is included all affect the cost too. The cost of outpatient treatment depends heavily on how many individual therapy sessions and group therapy sessions are included each week, while the cost of drug and alcohol treatment, more broadly, reflects everything from staffing to accreditation. When people compare the cost of alcohol rehab against the cost of drug rehab, whether run as an alcohol rehab and drug programme combined or as separate paths, or the cost of alcohol and drug care more generally, they often find the overall cost varies more with what is included in the cost, such as aftercare and family support, than with the substance itself. Average cost figures and total cost estimates are a useful starting point, but the real cost of rehabilitation for any individual only becomes clear once a provider has assessed their needs.
