Travelling to Spain for treatment: what it actually involves
A direct flight to Málaga, a driver waiting at arrivals, and about an hour inland to the house. For most people it is a simpler journey than they expect, and no further from home than a residential stay in the UK.
Getting to Sierra means flying into Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport, where a driver meets you and takes you the last hour or so north to Humilladero. We arrange the transfer, we tell you exactly what to bring, and your assessment is completed before you travel, so the only thing you have to manage on the day is the journey itself.
Getting here: Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport
Málaga is one of the best-connected airports in southern Europe, with direct flights from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Dublin and most other UK and European cities. Flight time from the UK is roughly two and a half to three hours, and many routes run several times a day, so you are rarely tied to a single departure. If you are travelling with a family member for the first part of the journey, that is welcome, and our family programme explains how relatives stay involved once treatment begins.
You do not need to work out the connection between the airport and the house yourself. Once your admission date is confirmed, we agree a flight with you and plan the pickup around it. If a companion is bringing you, we give them the same directions and a point of contact for the day.
The transfer to Humilladero
Sierra sits in the countryside near Humilladero, in the Antequera area, about an hour's drive north of the coast and the airport. A driver meets you inside the terminal and takes you straight to the house. There is no hire car to organise, no rural roads to navigate, and no train or bus to change. For most people the drive itself, out of the city and up into quieter, greener country, is where the journey starts to feel calmer. You can read more about the setting and how we keep it private and secure on our location and safety page.
What travelling for treatment actually involves
The practical side is deliberately light, because the clinical work is done ahead of time. Your medical assessment is completed before you travel, so we already know your history, your medication and whether a supervised detox is needed first. Where a detox is required, it is completed in an appropriate medical setting before the residential programme begins, and qualified nurses are part of the team during your stay.
- Documents: a valid passport, your travel insurance details, and any current prescriptions and medication in their original packaging.
- Packing: comfortable everyday clothes, walking shoes for the grounds, and anything that helps you settle. We send a full list once your date is booked.
- Arrival day: you are met at the airport, driven to the house, shown your room and given time to rest before the programme proper begins.
- Money and phones: we explain our approach to phones and contact clearly in advance, so there are no surprises when you arrive.
If any of this feels daunting, that is normal, and it is exactly what the admissions conversation is for. The team walks you through the programme and the logistics in plain terms before you commit to anything.
The honest point: residential treatment usually means travelling anyway
People often assume that going abroad puts treatment further out of reach than staying in Britain. In practice, residential rehab almost always means leaving home. The whole point of a residential stay is to step out of the environment where the addiction took hold, and very few people live within easy reach of a UK clinic that suits them. A bed in Scotland or the West Country can mean a long drive or an internal flight regardless. Seen that way, a short direct flight to Málaga is not the outlier it first appears, and our UK versus Spain comparison sets the two side by side honestly, including cost.
When you are ready to talk it through, our admissions team will plan the journey with you step by step, and the full cost, including what is and is not covered, is set out on the pricing page.
Questions people actually ask
Which airport do I fly into for Sierra Recovery?
You fly into Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport, which has direct flights from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Dublin and most UK and European cities. Flight time from the UK is roughly two and a half to three hours. The house is about an hour's drive north, near Humilladero.
How do I get from the airport to the centre?
We arrange it. Once your admission date is confirmed, a driver meets you inside the terminal and takes you straight to the house, about an hour inland. There is no hire car to organise and no connections to make on your own.
Do I need to sort out my assessment or detox before I travel?
Your medical assessment is completed before you travel, so we know your history and medication in advance. Where a supervised detox is needed, it is completed in an appropriate medical setting before the residential programme begins, and qualified nurses are part of the team during your stay.
Can a family member travel with me?
Yes. A relative is welcome to accompany you for the journey, and we give them the same directions and a contact for the day. Our family programme explains how relatives stay involved once treatment is under way.
Is travelling abroad really further than a UK rehab?
Not usually. Residential treatment almost always means leaving home, and a UK bed can mean a long drive or an internal flight anyway. A short direct flight to Málaga is often no further, and no more complicated, than reaching a suitable clinic in Britain.
