Alcohol rehab in Hackney: the honest guide to free and private help

A note on who we are

We should be straight with you before anything else. Sierra Recovery is not based in Hackney. We are a registered residential clinic in the mountains of Málaga, in southern Spain. This page is not a directory, and no clinic has paid to appear on it. We take no referral fees from anyone, and no service is described here as local to Hackney when it is not. Most of this guide is about the help that already exists in and around the borough, because for many people in Hackney that is the right place to start. We appear once, near the end, as one treatment option among several, clearly labelled.

The picture in Hackney

Hackney is a large, densely populated east London borough, and like the rest of the capital it has an established network of NHS and voluntary services for people affected by drug and alcohol use. Alcohol is the most common reason adults come forward for treatment in England, and services in Hackney see the full range, from occasional heavy alcohol consumption to daily dependence, and from alcohol addiction through to wider substance misuse and drug addiction. The NHS recommends not regularly drinking more than 14 units a week, and support and guidance is available whether you are drinking above that guideline, using drugs, or facing both together. You do not need a diagnosis, a rock-bottom moment or anyone's permission to ask for help. You can be working, housed and managing on the surface and still be dependent on alcohol or drugs. Reaching out early tends to make treatment shorter and safer, not longer, whatever the severity of your addiction.

Start here, before you consider paying for anything. These services are free, they are local, and for a great many people they are enough on their own. We publish them because a centre that only tells you about its own programme is not giving you the full picture.

AA and NA meetings in Hackney

Mutual aid meetings are free, they run most days, and there is no waiting list, no referral and no assessment. You can walk into one this week. They work alongside whatever else you choose rather than instead of it, and plenty of people use them and nothing else.

What actually happens at a first meeting

You do not have to speak, and you do not have to give your surname. Most meetings open with a reading, someone shares for a while, and others speak if they want to. It lasts about an hour, and it is free, though a basket goes round for the room hire. Nobody takes a register and nobody will ask you to commit to anything.

An open meeting can be attended by anyone, including family. A closed meeting is for people who think they may have a problem themselves. If the first group does not suit you, the next one along will feel different, because each has its own character. The usual advice is to try three before deciding it is not for you.

The private and residential reality

Here is the honest part. There is no NHS residential detox or rehab unit sitting inside Hackney itself. Publicly funded residential detox and rehab placements do exist, but in England they are almost always arranged through the community service above, which assesses you and applies for funding to a placement that may be anywhere in the country. If you want inpatient rehab, the City & Hackney Recovery Service is still the door you go through.

Outside the NHS route, private rehab covers several different types of addiction treatment under one umbrella term. Day rehab means structured treatment with no overnight stay; inpatient rehab and residential rehab centres mean living on site for the length of the programme; and a medical detox can be arranged as a standalone admission before either. Some private clinics call themselves an addiction treatment centre, others a rehab clinic, a rehab facility or simply rehab services; the label on the door matters less than what the treatment programme actually includes, and whether it is matched to your treatment needs. Rehabs vary widely in what a rehab offers beyond a bed and a detox, from structured therapy and aftercare planning to family work, so ask what happens after detox or alcohol withdrawal is complete, not just during it. In England, health and social care services, including many residential rehab clinics, are inspected and rated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), so it is reasonable to ask any private clinic for its current CQC rating before you book.

Private residential clinics operate across London and the home counties, and several are within easy reach of Hackney. Check any of them on the Care Quality Commission register for its current rating and registered address before you commit. A word of caution: many rehab "directories" and phone lines are paid lead-generation businesses that earn a fee for passing your details on. Ask any service directly whether it owns and runs the clinic it is booking you into, and who is paying whom.

What private treatment actually costs

The figures below are indicative ranges drawn from published UK rehab directories. They are not quotes, and any real price for a residential rehab programme depends on the length of stay, the level of medical support and the room, not the marketing name given to the alcohol programme or drug rehab package. Always ask for a written, all-inclusive price before you commit.

• Private residential rehab in the UK: commonly around £12,000 to £40,000 per week at the mid-market end, with a standard 28-day treatment programme often falling between £4,000 and £12,000, and premium clinics charging considerably more.
• Medical detox only: a shorter admission of roughly 7 to 10 days, priced below a full residential rehab programme.
• Therapy included: most residential and community treatment programmes build in structured individual and group therapy, often alongside cognitive behavioural therapy and family support, rather than charging for these separately.
• Funding routes: an NHS-funded placement arranged via the community service; self-funding; some private medical insurance policies (check whether addiction treatment is covered); and staged payment plans offered by some private clinics.

Considering treatment abroad? One honest option

For some people, leaving the city for a few weeks is part of what makes a recovery journey possible: distance from the pub, the off-licence, the same streets and the same phone contacts, plus daylight, warmth and space to sleep. It does not suit everyone, and it is not a substitute for the free local service above. If it is something you are weighing up, here is what we are, stated plainly.

Which option is right for you

• If cost is the barrier: start with the City & Hackney Recovery Service. It is free, it is local, and for many people it is all that is needed. Nothing on this page should push you past it.
• If withdrawal could be dangerous: do not stop alcohol or benzodiazepines on your own. Speak to your GP or call NHS 111, and let a doctor plan a supervised detox for withdrawal symptoms.
• If severity and treatment needs are unclear: someone drinking occasionally to excess has different treatment needs from someone with daily dependence and physical withdrawal symptoms. A free assessment, whether through the NHS service above or a private clinic, is how the right level of care gets decided, from group therapy and support groups through to a full residential rehab programme.
• If you want privacy and distance from your triggers, and can self-fund: a residential stay, in the UK or abroad, may suit you. Treatment abroad, including with us, is one honest treatment option here, not the only one.
• If you are a family member: you deserve mental health support and family support too. Al-Anon, Nacoa and your GP are good starting points, whether or not your loved one is ready.

Recovery from addiction is rarely a single event. Whichever door you use first, a longer-term recovery journey usually includes aftercare, ongoing support groups and mental health support once the initial treatment programme ends, to help you continue your recovery rather than just complete it.
