Start here, before you consider paying for anything. These services are free, they are local, and for a great many people they are enough on their own. We publish them because a centre that only tells you about its own programme is not giving you the full picture.

AA and NA meetings in Bali

Mutual aid meetings are free, they run most days, and there is no waiting list, no referral and no assessment. You can walk into one this week. They work alongside whatever else you choose rather than instead of it, and plenty of people use them and nothing else.

What actually happens at a first meeting

You do not have to speak, and you do not have to give your surname. Most meetings open with a reading, someone shares for a while, and others speak if they want to. It lasts about an hour, and it is free, though a basket goes round for the room hire. Nobody takes a register and nobody will ask you to commit to anything.

An open meeting can be attended by anyone, including family. A closed meeting is for people who think they may have a problem themselves. If the first group does not suit you, the next one along will feel different, because each has its own character. The usual advice is to try three before deciding it is not for you.

Yes, private residential treatment centres do operate in Bali, and several are marketed specifically to English-speaking foreigners as a rehab centre for a luxury retreat-style stay. The setting is appealing and some employ experienced Western counsellors, with marketing that often points to a holistic, therapeutic approach to addiction treatment alongside more conventional talking therapy. But there are honest points to weigh before you choose a rehab facility here. Bali is not covered by an equivalent of the UK’s CQC or Spain’s regional health registers, so oversight is lighter and quality varies widely between centres. Standards of medical detox, staff qualifications and clinical governance are not something you can check against a single public regulator, so you have to verify each centre and its range of specialist treatment services yourself. Ask who provides medical cover, whether detox is doctor-supervised, what the clinical staff are qualified in, whether individual treatment plans and evidence-based, therapeutic work are on offer for drug addiction and alcohol addiction alike, whether any dual diagnosis or wider mental health conditions are properly assessed, how relapse is planned for, and how continuing care works once you leave the island.

Indonesia has been developing national treatment standards, which is a positive sign, but oversight is newer and less established than the systems UK and European clients may be used to. Treat glossy marketing with the same caution you would anywhere, whatever a brochure promises about lasting recovery or comprehensive drug and alcohol care, and confirm licensing and medical arrangements in writing before you commit to any residential rehab programme, whichever centre in Bali you are considering.

What treatment in Bali costs

The free and charity routes above cost nothing. Private residential rehab in Bali is a different picture: published listings for international-facing centres vary a great deal, commonly running from several thousand pounds a month into much higher luxury tiers, with flights, visas and any medical detox usually billed on top. Because oversight is lighter, price is not a reliable guide to clinical quality here, a higher fee can reflect villas and pools rather than better care, and a lower or more affordable residential treatment listing is not automatically a red flag either.

Cost ranges are indicative, drawn from public directory listings and vary by centre. They are not quotations. Confirm the exact fee, and what it includes, directly with any centre before you rely on it.

Considering residential treatment abroad?

Where the limits are	It is not a hospital and not a detox unit. Where a medically supervised detox is clinically needed it is completed in an appropriate medical setting before admission and billed separately. Qualified nurses are part of the team throughout the stay.

What happens afterwards	Aftercare is agreed before you leave: a session every week for a full year, online or in person at the PROMIS clinics in London, which is more than 48 sessions in the twelve months after discharge. A written handover goes to your GP so nothing has to be explained from scratch.
