How Much Does Rehab Cost in New Zealand?

Start with what is free in New Zealand

For a large number of people, the right first step costs nothing. New Zealand has a real network of free and publicly funded rehabilitation and support, and you are entitled to use it before you spend anything on private care, whether the issue is alcohol, drug use, or both. These are the genuine national options.

• Alcohol Drug Helpline – free, confidential support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by phone on 0800 787 797 or by texting 8681. There are dedicated lines: Māori Line 0800 787 798, Pasifika Line 0800 787 799 and Youth Line 0800 787 984. Trained counsellors give information, brief intervention and referral, nationwide (alcoholdrughelp.org.nz).
• Community alcohol and drug services (CADS) – run by Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora and free to New Zealand residents. They provide counselling, youth services, opioid treatment, dual-diagnosis support and medically managed withdrawal (community and in-patient detox). Your GP can refer you, or you can self-refer in many regions (healthnz.govt.nz).
• 1737, Need to talk? – free national mental health and addiction support line, call or text 1737 any time to speak with a trained counsellor (1737.org.nz).
• Alcoholics Anonymous Aotearoa/New Zealand and Narcotics Anonymous Aotearoa NZ – free peer support meetings across the country, in person and online. NA also runs a helpline on 0800 628 632 (aa.org.nz, nzna.org).
• The Salvation Army Bridge Programme – community and residential addiction services in many towns and cities. Residential treatment is commonly funded through a redirection of Work and Income (Ministry of Social Development) payments, so cost is often not a barrier (bridge.salvationarmy.org.nz).

Because these services exist, no one in New Zealand should feel that private cost is the only route to getting sober and well, or that private rehab costs are the only way to seek treatment. It is not, and this page would be dishonest if it suggested otherwise.

The private and residential reality in New Zealand

New Zealand does have residential treatment, and much of it is delivered by not-for-profit and NGO providers funded through Health New Zealand rather than paid for privately. Whether you are looking for rehab in Auckland or a rehab centre elsewhere in the country, the honest picture is that publicly funded addiction treatment places are limited and waiting lists are common, so the wait, rather than the fee, is often the real obstacle for people with severe addiction who need inpatient rehab quickly. Purely private, self-pay alcohol rehab or drug and alcohol rehab is comparatively uncommon here, and where a standard rehab programme is advertised privately, the fee is typically in the low tens of thousands of New Zealand dollars for a multi-week stay. We are not naming a specific New Zealand rehabilitation centre or quoting a specific price, because we cannot verify a current published figure for one, and we will not invent it.

Indicative costs, at a glance

These are broad, indicative private rehab costs and public funding ranges to help you plan, not quotes, covering the costs of drug and alcohol treatment and alcohol rehabilitation across New Zealand. Actual figures depend on eligibility, region, provider and length of stay.

• Publicly funded outpatient care and community support (CADS, NGOs): free or low cost to eligible residents.
• Publicly funded residential and detox: generally free or low cost, but subject to assessment, eligibility and waiting lists.
• Private counselling and outpatient sessions: commonly a few hundred New Zealand dollars per hour of specialist input, depending on the practitioner.
• Private residential rehab (New Zealand): uncommon and, where advertised, typically in the low tens of thousands of New Zealand dollars for a multi-week programme.
• Residential rehab abroad (Sierra Recovery, Spain): a published, fixed £9,900 for 28 days (roughly NZ$21,000, depending on the exchange rate), with any hospital detox arranged and billed separately.

What drives the price

When there is a fee, four things move it most:

• Setting and location: where a programme runs, and how much is amenity versus clinical care.
• Length of stay: a fortnight costs less than a month, and clinical need, not budget, should set the length.
• Level of care: outpatient support is far cheaper than a residential bed with 24-hour staffing.
• Detox: a medically supervised withdrawal, sometimes called medical detox, is a distinct medical service. It should be costed and delivered separately, not folded into a headline residential price.

Whatever the setting, look for evidence-based therapies, both group therapy and one-to-one work, a holistic view of physical and mental health, and professional medical oversight to manage withdrawal symptoms safely. Good rehab facilities are tailored to individual needs rather than one-size-fits-all, addressing physical health alongside the addiction, and should offer continued support once residential care ends.

Funding your treatment

The main routes in New Zealand are the public system first, then private options if you choose or need them. Publicly funded mental health services through Health New Zealand and NGO providers are the free foundation for anyone who wants to seek treatment for drug or alcohol addiction. Some private health insurance policies contribute towards mental health and addiction services, so it is worth checking your policy wording and any exclusions or waiting periods. Where a fee applies, many providers running private rehab programmes, including Sierra, will discuss payment plans rather than expect a single up-front sum. Be wary of any “free” helpline or broker that then steers you to a paid bed, because some are quietly paid a referral commission for doing so.

Is treatment abroad worth considering?

For some New Zealanders who want to stop drinking or using drugs for good, it genuinely is worth considering, and for others it is not, so here is the honest version of both. A residential programme abroad can mean starting within days rather than joining a waiting list, real distance from the people and places tied to your using, and, in southern Spain, a climate and pace that support sleep, routine and mood while all three are fragile. It can support the next stage of your recovery journey by pairing structured routine with peer support and clinical care, and it can also cost less than a comparable private stay in some other countries.

It is not the right answer when a local rehab or free service serves you better, or when private residential treatment closer to home is genuinely a better fit. Staying in New Zealand is likely the better choice when you have young children or a caring role you cannot step away from, when you need medically complex inpatient detox with a hospital on the same site, when flying is not realistic for health reasons, or simply when you have not yet tried the free CADS, helpline and mutual-aid options that are the right first step for many people seeking help with alcohol or drug use.
