Rehab in Mallorca: the main options, compared

People look for this in a lot of ways: rehab Mallorca, alcohol rehab Palma, detox Mallorca, private rehab Balearics. The options below are the same whichever phrase brought you here.

The picture in Mallorca

Mallorca is better served than most Spanish regions and considerably better served than people expect, and the reason is the resident population rather than the tourist one.

Decades of settled British, German and Scandinavian residents have produced something Spain mostly does not have: a functioning private health sector working in those languages, and informal support structures around the Anglican churches and expatriate associations. If you live here, you are not starting from nothing.

The complication is the other side of the same coin. That community is large but connected. If your business, your children's school and your social life sit inside the same few thousand people, being seen walking into a clinic on Jaime III is a real cost, and worrying about it stops people getting help for years.

Free addiction services in Mallorca

Start here, before you consider paying for anything. We publish these because for a lot of people they are the right first step.

The Balearic health service, IB-Salut, provides addiction treatment through the public network, and the Consell de Mallorca runs local drug dependency and prevention services. Treatment is free at the point of use if you are registered with the Balearic health service, and the route in is normally through your centre de salut. Services are delivered in Spanish and Catalan.

If you are a visitor rather than a resident, the public network is not designed for you, and a GHIC or EHIC covers state-provided necessary care rather than planned treatment.

AA and NA meetings in Mallorca

This is the strongest single asset on the island, it runs in English, and it is free.

English-language Alcoholics Anonymous meets in Palma, Alcudia, Manacor, Port de Pollença and Magaluf. The main Palma meetings run at the Anglican Church on Carrer Nunez de Balboa, with further meetings at the Alano centre in the city. Outside Palma there are regular meetings in Alcudia, at Puerto Pollensa and in Magaluf.

What actually happens at a first meeting

You turn up, you sit down, and you do not have to speak. Nobody takes your surname, nobody asks for money, and nobody will make you commit to anything. People share their own experience for an hour and then it ends. If the anonymity is what worries you on an island this connected, it is taken seriously and it is the reason the tradition exists.

Private treatment in Mallorca, and what it costs

There is a detoxification clinic in central Palma, near Avenida Jaime III, handling medically supervised withdrawal. There is a functioning private psychiatry and psychology sector working in English, German and Swedish as well as Spanish. And there is at least one single-client luxury residential programme operating from a private villa, aimed at international clients and priced accordingly.

On price, Mallorca sits inside the wider Spanish luxury market. Villa programmes on the Spanish coast start at roughly €4,500 a week, about €18,000 a month, and the broad luxury band runs to around €35,000 a week. At the ultra-private end, where a centre treats one client at a time, in Mallorca as in Ibiza and around Marbella, fees run from about €47,380 to as much as €100,000 a week, which is €190,000 to €400,000 for a month. Checking a centre is authorised in the Balearics

This is the check worth making, and the rules here are not the same as on the mainland.

Addiction treatment is a regulated health activity across Spain under Real Decreto 1277/2003. Each autonomous community then runs its own authorisation and register. In the Balearics that is Decreto 100/2010, later modified by Ley 10/2018, governing health authorisation and the Registre de Centres, Serveis i Establiments Sanitaris de les Illes Balears, administered by the Conselleria de Salut.

So a centre with beds on Mallorca must be authorised by the Balearic authority. An Andalusian N.I.C.A. number, a mainland registration, a company tax number or a certificate from an international membership association is not the same thing, and is sometimes offered in its place.

What to ask, in writing:

1. The registration number and the exact registered company name, so you can look it up in the register yourself.
2. Which register it belongs to, and whether that register covers the island the beds are actually on.
3. What the entry authorises, and when it expires. Authorisation for an outpatient service is not authorisation for a residential unit, and neither of them authorises a medical detox.
4. Who provides medical cover, physically where they are, and at what hours. Then ask what happens at three in the morning if somebody has a seizure.

A centre that holds an authorisation answers the first question immediately, because it is public information. This matters most around detox: withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines can cause seizures and, at worst, delirium tremens, which needs medical staff on site rather than a nurse who visits.

When staying on the island is the right answer

We would rather write this section than have you assume we think everybody should get on a plane.

If you live on Mallorca permanently, have family here, have work you cannot leave for a month, and can plug into the meeting network above, then treating locally and building your recovery where you actually live has a real advantage. Recovery happens after the residential month, in the ordinary weeks, and a support structure already in your own town beats one that is a flight away.

When it is worth travelling

People leave Mallorca for treatment for three reasons, and they are all legitimate.

Privacy. The English-speaking community here is large and interconnected. Treating on the mainland removes the risk of being recognised in a way nothing local can.

Intensity. Outpatient therapy once or twice a week is a different proposition to a residential month with three structured groups a day. If outpatient support has already been tried and has not held, the step up is residential, and the island's residential options are limited and expensive.

Cost. Single-client villa programmes are priced for a market that can absorb it. There are licensed residential options on the mainland at a fraction of that.

Sierra Recovery, Málaga, Spain

We are not in Mallorca. The centre is on the mainland in Málaga province, at Cortijo Ferradores in Humilladero near Antequera, about forty five minutes from Málaga airport. Palma has direct flights to Málaga year round and the hop is short, so a family member can come over for a family session and be home the same evening.

Because we are in Andalusia, we are on the Andalusian register, under N.I.C.A. 67331, authorised for atención sanitaria a drogodependientes (healthcare for drug dependency, authorised care unit U.71): a health centre with a supervised treatment residence. That is expressly not a hospital and not a detox unit, which is why detox, where clinically needed, happens in a hospital before admission and is billed separately. If you are detoxing in Palma first, that is a sensible sequence and we will coordinate on timing so you travel when it is medically safe. The programme is twenty eight days, with three structured group sessions a day plus an afternoon group activity, three one-to-one sessions a week, and a seventeen-module curriculum. The method is adapted from PROMIS Clinics, who have treated addiction in the United Kingdom since 1986. The therapy is evidence-based rather than proprietary: cognitive behavioural therapy at the core, with dialectical behaviour therapy, EMDR and somatic work where trauma sits underneath the using, family therapy, and relapse prevention agreed before discharge. Co-occurring depression, anxiety, PTSD and burnout are treated in the same plan. We do not treat eating disorders as a primary condition.

The published price is £9,900 for twenty eight days with a private room included, with hospital detox and medical costs billed separately and an itemised quotation before you commit. We neither pay nor accept referral fees.

For anyone returning to Mallorca afterwards, continuing care runs online, and the meeting network above is what you come home to. We would rather hand you over to it deliberately than leave you to find it.

Which option is right for you

Start with the free services if you are registered in the Balearics and can manage the process in Spanish or Catalan.

Use the meetings regardless. Five towns with English-language meetings is an unusually strong network for an island this size, it is free, and it is what will still be there in month six.

Stay local if you have family and work here and can build a routine around the meetings and a private therapist.

Travel if privacy is the obstacle, if you need residential intensity, or if the local residential quotes are beyond what you can justify.

If you are physically dependent, the order changes: medical advice first, detox in a hospital, then a programme.
